Location: The successful candidate may be based in a country where one of the independent National/Regional Greenpeace organisations (NRO’s) is located (subject to agreement). See the locations here. The Greenpeace International Programme Department is seeking a Global Climate Political Expert to serve in a Senior Portfolio Manager role and lead the development of our global climate political related projects and campaigns.

As a key member of the Political & Business team in Greenpeace International, you will guide and support staff across GPI and our National & Regional Organisations (NROs) with high level strategic, technical, political and policy expertise. You are able to represent Greenpeace at external events and as part of a team engaging in multilateral processes and fora. You will also facilitate knowledge and information sharing, collaboration and best practice between NROs and stay on top of the latest political, technical and policy developments, always aspiring to ensure that innovation is at the heart of our work.


The overall purpose of this role is to act as strategist and provide expertise in advising the Greenpeace Political & Business Team, campaigners, engagement and communications colleagues on global climate political campaign related matters. As well as sometimes representing Greenpeace and supporting colleagues and delegations in selective international events and fora.


Your duties will include:

  • Developing global campaign strategies

  • Supporting campaign development and execution

  • Internal education related to climate political campaigns

Job requirements

What you’ll need to succeed in this role:

Skills:

  • Substantial relevant professional experience of, and expertise in global climate politics. Along with well-rounded insight into the drivers and impacts of the climate crisis in different geographies, and the ability to connect global processes to national realities.

  • Proficiency with working and advising at senior management level in the entire global network. Specifically providing consultation and guidance on political issues, the shifting nature of power, and the external engagements of the International Executive Directors on related matters;

  • Significant experience in the field of climate politics, including in-depth experience at senior level (Senior Advisor/ Campaigner and above) of which a minimum of some years in an international organisation

  • Substantial awareness of the changing geopolitical environment and the growing corporate capture of and influence on politics. An understanding of the geopolitical role of Brazil, China, India and South Africa in particular is desirable

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and accurately grasp new and sophisticated concepts and areas of climate politics and turn them into understandable campaign strategies

  • Expertise in strategic thinking and engaging in high level political meetings. This is driven by a combination of the following key skills: outstanding influencing and trust building skills, and strong negotiation, communication and presentation skills, including those in high profile media settings

  • Experience in developing and implementing campaign strategies and tactics for campaigns with political goals

  • You have existing networks within relevant political bodies, think tanks and NGO fora

  • Excellent networking skills (for both internal and external stakeholders), the capability to seek opportunities, and the capacity to find vital resources and make the best use of them;

  • A politically focused mentality – you see the political angles immediately and can connect that thinking to power shifting

  • A collaborative approach with a deep appreciation and respect for diverse perspectives and lived experiences. A passion for curating and actively influencing any discussions and actions that lead to crafting a more diverse and inclusive work environment

  • Unmistakable support for and belief in Greenpeace core aims and values

  • Proficiency in English and preferably one other language and have substantial multi-cultural experience
