Are you a software-savvy operations expert who thrives at the intersection of technology, automation, and impact? The Technology Department at Greenpeace International (GPI) is looking for a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to help us build and maintain high-performing systems that power a globally distributed organisation and a powerful environmental movement.

In this role, you’ll apply software engineering principles to IT operations—automating infrastructure, scaling systems, and solving complex challenges that increase reliability, performance, and resilience across our global technology ecosystem. Your work will directly support Greenpeace’s ability to run campaigns more effectively, work more efficiently, and stay aligned with the values of a green and peaceful future.

We’re looking for someone with a passion for operational excellence and infrastructure automation—someone who thrives in a distributed team, works proactively across time zones, and brings both technical depth and a collaborative mindset to everything they do.

In this role you will:

  • Design, implement, scale, maintain, and support systems using automation to meet defined service level objectives.

  • Use monitoring and observability tools to identify system improvements and proactively boost performance and availability.

  • Develop and support backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity systems.

  • Collaborate across teams to improve operational readiness and inform roadmap planning.

  • Provide technical expertise and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders.

  • Maintain high-quality, up-to-date documentation aligned with team standards.

  • Deliver training and support for staff with a wide range of technical skills.

Job requirements

What we’re looking for:

We know no candidate will match every requirement, but we believe the ideal candidate will bring a strong mix of the following:

  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience in IT operations, DevOps, or site reliability engineering.

  • Deep experience managing infrastructure and services through automation, ideally in both on-premise and cloud-based environments.

  • Strong knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, observability, and monitoring tools.

  • Proficiency with at least one programming or scripting language.

  • Solid experience with OS administration (Linux, Windows, MacOS), virtualized and containerized environments.

  • Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, switching, firewalls).

  • Experience working in Agile and/or DevOps environments.

  • Ability to work remotely in a distributed, asynchronous, and culturally diverse team.

  • Strong communication skills—both verbal and written—in English; fluency in an additional language is a plus.

  • A proactive, collaborative, and problem-solving mindset with a commitment to continuous learning.

What you can expect:

When joining the Technology Department at Greenpeace International, you’ll be part of a purpose-driven, forward-looking team that believes in using technology for maximum environmental impact.

You’ll help empower campaigners, analysts, and change-makers around the world by building systems that are robust, responsive, and resilient. Whether it's managing infrastructure, automating operations, or supporting disaster recovery, your work will help Greenpeace operate with greater speed, efficiency, and security.

You’ll be encouraged to develop both personally and professionally, taking advantage of the wide range of learning and development opportunities available to our staff. Staff can also access various wellbeing initiatives and also have the opportunity to join our global Equity, Diversity & Inclusion staff communities.

If you're ready to help build the digital backbone of a global environmental movement—and to do it in a way that reflects Greenpeace’s values—we’d love to hear from you.
